Ilwolobongdo (Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks)

This traditional Korean painting symbolizes the authority and harmony of the universe. Featuring the sun and moon balanced above five sacred peaks, with flowing rivers and pine trees below, the composition represents the eternal order of nature, yin and yang, heaven and earth, permanence and renewal. Historically placed behind the royal throne during the Joseon Dynasty, Ilwolobongdo served as a visual expression of kingship, stability, and cosmic balance. Bold yet orderly, the painting remains one of the most iconic images in Korean art, conveying power, continuity, and timeless harmony at a glance.

In Ilwolobongdo, every element is deliberate, forming a complete cosmological image rather than a simple landscape. The sun and moon represent the dual forces of yang and yin, symbolizing balance, continuity, and the eternal cycle of time; together, they affirm the ruler’s role as the mediator between heaven and earth. The five peaks stand for the five sacred mountains of Korea: Baekdusan (north), Jirisan (south), Hallasan (center), Myohyangsan (west), and Kumgangsan (east), collectively embodying the stability and territorial wholeness of the nation. Flowing water at the base signifies life, renewal, and the unending movement of the natural order, while the evergreen pine trees represent longevity, constancy, and moral integrity. Unified in a single composition, these symbols express an ideal universe, harmonious, enduring, and governed by balance, making Ilwolobongdo not merely a painting, but a visual statement of cosmic order and rightful authority.

This work is created strictly in accordance with traditional Korean painting methods. It is entirely hand-painted using authentic Korean mineral pigments on traditional Korean paper, following time-honored techniques passed down through generations. No acrylics, synthetic paints, or modern shortcuts are used, only materials and processes rooted in classical practice. Each piece reflects the discipline, patience, and material integrity that define genuine Korean traditional painting, ensuring an artwork of lasting depth and authenticity rather than a mass-produced imitation.
